MINISTER ENG. MUMBA CALLS FOR PROPER REGULATIONS AND GUIDELINES FOR VOLUNTEERISM.

In a bid to ensuring well-coordinated volunteer activities, the Minister of Labour, Honourable Eng. Vitumbiko Mumba says the country needs a policy framework to guide the works that volunteers do. This, according to the Minister, will help to fully harness the transformative potential of volunteerism as well as its full recognition and integration into national planning and programming. He made the remarks on Friday at Airwing Primary School grounds in Lilongwe, during the commemoration of the 2024 International Volunteers Day, an annual event set aside by the United Nations, observed on 5th December every year. While appreciating the works that volunteers do, the Minister said the commemoration of the day is an acknowledgment of the invaluable contributions of volunteers, adding that volunteerism is the heart of community-driven development as it reflects the values of humanity.

“The resilience and aspirations of our people, when channeled through volunteerism, have the potential to redefine our development trajectory in the face of socio-economic and environmental challenges,” he said. According to Eng. Mumba, there is a synergy between volunteerism and the realization of decent work standards and has since made an assurance that his Ministry will continue working towards addressing gaps in labour laws, ensuring fairness and dignity in workplaces. During the event, the Minister made a personal commitment to take part in volunteer activities in the country.

Speaking on behalf of volunteer organisations, National Youth Council of Malawi Executive Director, Rex Chapota, thanked the government for creating a conducive environment for volunteer activities to thrive. Gomezgani Nkhoma, who spoke on behalf of local volunteers, said there is a knowledge gap on the works of volunteers in the country. “There is an urgent need to raise awareness of volunteerism in the country to address the existing knowledge gaps. We also need an enhanced welfare support so we are able to perform our duties, fully aware that we have the backing of the people we are serving,” he said. The commemoration was held under the theme ‘Volunteer Actions Towards a Sustainable and Inclusive Future’. Over 1,000 trees were planted during the event, attesting to the strength of collaborative efforts that exist between the government, volunteer organizations and other stakeholders in matters of national interest.
