PS CHALLENGES TEVET EXAMINERS ON QUALITY AND CREDIBLE EXAMINATIONS

Secretary for Labour, Chikondano Mussa, has called on TEVET examination developers to exercise professionalism in the development of the exams, if they are to remain credible. The call was made in Mchinji on Thursday when she opened a test development session for 21 trades for the July 2024 TEVET examination series which include, automobile mechanics, bricklaying, fabrication and welding, electrical installation and electronics among others.

According to Mussa, Malawi vision 2063 will only be achieved when citizens are highly knowledgeable with relevant quality education that incorporates a strong element of academic excellence and technical and vocational skills fit for the labour market, which she says begins with the production of high quality TEVET examinations.

“These are the trades that will make the Malawi Vision 2063 a reality hence there is a strong need to develop motto’s so we can have as many people as possible, know and develop interest in the fields,” she said. She has since reminded the examiners that they are bound by the oath of secrecy and that they should always exercise caution with examination matters.

Executive Director for the TEVET Authority, Elwin Chiwembu Sichiola, said their institutions’ remains committed to ensuring continued support and investments in the TEVET system. Reaffirming the commitment, the ED announced that the Authority has increased their support to the countries technical colleges where 6 Billion Malawi Kwacha will be disbursed during the current financial year alone with another MK150 Million to be channeled towards certification.

Assistant Labour Commissioner, responsible for Trade Test who also chairs TEVET examinations Assessment and Certification Unit, Joseph Chirombo, said the team will produce two sets of examination targeting 8000 students in the 2024 TEVET examination series. He said as a quality assurance measure, the examiners will undergo an oath of secrecy in a quest to enhance credibility of the exams.

The examiners are drawn from technical colleges, industries and private companies.
